A wider world of safari stays

Ranger Buck works with leading camps and lodges across Southern Africa, giving your safari specialist more ways to shape the right journey around you.

How this works

Every one of these is a starting point

Nothing on this page is a fixed departure. There is no coach, no group you are joined to, and no date you have to fit around.

Each itinerary is a route that works — the lodges are ones Ranger Buck has used, the internal flights connect, and the prices are real quotes rather than teasers. Most travellers change something: a night added here, a lodge swapped there, a golf day traded for a walking safari. That is the intended use.

Ranger Buck has been arranging these since 2005, is a member of ATTA, APTA and SATSA, and handles the whole thing — the internal flights, the transfers, the park fees, the border assistance and the person waiting at the airport with your name on a board.

What these prices are, and what they are not. Every figure on this page is a “from” rate, per person sharing, at the entry-level room category. It moves with season, availability and how many of you are travelling. International flights are not included in any of them. Your quote will be specific, and it will be honest about what is and is not covered.

Good to know

Planning a safari — common questions

The questions travellers ask before they choose an itinerary.

How much does a safari with Ranger Buck cost?

The itineraries on this page start from US$3,479 per person sharing for four days in the Greater Kruger, and run to US$17,780 for eleven days across three countries. Most travellers land between US$5,000 and US$10,000 per person. Season moves the price most, then room category, then group size. None of these figures include your international flights.

Are these fixed packages, or can they be changed?

They can all be changed, and most are. Add a night, swap a lodge, trade a golf day for a walking safari, or extend a leg you like the look of. Each itinerary page lists the five changes people ask for most often on that particular trip. Tell your specialist what you want different and it comes back priced rather than negotiated.

When is the best time to go?

For game viewing across Southern Africa, May to October — the dry season thins the bush and concentrates animals at water. Victoria Falls is at its most dramatic from March to June. The Okavango floods between June and September. Cape Town is at its best from November to March. May and June are the months that serve the most legs at once, which is why they book out first.

Do you arrange the flights?

Internal and regional flights, yes — and where an itinerary includes them, they are in the price and listed on that page. International flights into and out of Africa are not included in any of these itineraries. Ranger Buck can advise on routings and timings so your connections work, but you book those tickets yourself.

Are any of these malaria-free?

Madikwe is a genuinely malaria-free reserve, and Cape Town and the Winelands are malaria-free. The Greater Kruger, the Okavango, the Chobe and Victoria Falls are all low-risk malaria areas, with the risk lowest in the dry winter months that also happen to be the best game-viewing season. Use the Malaria-free filter above if it matters to you, and speak to a travel clinic about prophylaxis for anything else.

Can we travel with children?

On most of these, yes, though the minimum age varies by property rather than by trip — a houseboat cabin sets a different floor from a tented camp. Each itinerary page states its own minimum age and how children are charged. Tell your specialist the ages at enquiry and the family rooms, child rates and any age restrictions all come back in one quote rather than surfacing later.

How far ahead should I book?

Six to twelve months for travel in the May-to-October window, and longer if you want a specific small camp or a gorilla permit — Rwanda permits are limited daily and go early. Shorter lead times are workable outside peak season. If your dates are fixed and the trip matters, book the lodges first and the flights second.

What is a private reserve, and does it matter?

It matters more than almost anything else on a safari. In a national park you stay on the roads, share sightings with every other vehicle and cannot drive at night. On a private reserve — Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Kapama, Madikwe, Phinda — guides go off-road to a sighting, vehicle numbers are limited, and night drives and guided walks are allowed. Almost every itinerary on this page uses private reserves for exactly that reason.

Not quite it?

Tell us what you had in mind

If nothing above is the right shape, describe the trip you actually want — dates, budget, who is coming and what you care about seeing. That is how most Ranger Buck itineraries begin.

  • Combine any two of these itineraries into one journey
  • Change the lodges while keeping the route
  • Add Cape Town, the Winelands or the Garden Route to any safari
  • Build around a honeymoon, a birthday or a family group
  • Move the whole thing to a different season and see what it does to the price
