From US$5,542 per person sharing for four days and three nights, and that figure includes both the gorilla permit and the golden monkey permit, the private vehicle and driver-guide, the Kigali day and all the listed meals. The permit is the dominant cost in any Rwanda quote, so always check whether a cheaper-looking itinerary has it inside or outside the price. Because every trip is tailored, your final quote may come in above or below that figure.

Between forty minutes and five hours each way, depending entirely on where the family has moved overnight. The terrain is steep, muddy and at altitude — roughly 2,500 to 3,000 metres. You do not need to be an athlete, but you do need to be able to walk uphill on uneven ground for a few hours. A porter is included and worth using even if you feel you do not need one.

It is a Rwanda Development Board rule, not Ranger Buck’s, and it is not waived. Gorillas share enough of our biology to catch human illnesses, and younger children are both more likely to be carrying something and harder to keep to the seven-metre distance rule. If you are travelling with under-fifteens, the golden monkey trek has no such limit and Akagera works for all ages.

No operator can guarantee it, but the success rate in Volcanoes National Park is very high — the families are habituated and trackers locate them before the groups set out. If a trek fails for reasons within the park’s control, the Rwanda Development Board’s policy on partial refunds or a repeat permit applies; Ranger Buck will explain where you stand before you book.

June to September and December to February are the dry seasons, which makes the trek considerably easier underfoot. The gorillas are there year-round and permits are capped every day of the year, so the trade-off is mud against availability. Book early for the dry months — permits sell out.
