Luxury fly-in safari · MalaMala Game Reserve
MalaMala Exclusive Fly-In Safari
Four nights in the reserve that made photographic safari a business. MalaMala shares nineteen kilometres of unfenced frontage with the Kruger along the Sand River, and it is the single best-known address in Africa for leopard.
Private reserve safari
The reserve people name when they say they want to see a leopard
MalaMala is a private reserve on the western boundary of the Kruger, and there is no fence between the two.
What sets it apart from its neighbours is the frontage: nineteen kilometres along the Sand River, a natural corridor used by big cats and one of the reasons the reserve has the reputation it has for leopard.
Ranger Buck describes MalaMala as having the highest leopard density in the world. The reserve stopped hunting and switched to photographic safari in the 1960s, decades before many of its neighbours, and the animals have been habituated to vehicles over generations.
This trip gives you four nights at MalaMala Camp with day and night drives in open vehicles, plus flights from Johannesburg so you are not spending a day of a five-day trip on the N4.
Who it suits: photographers, travellers who want to focus specifically on cats, and families with older children. The minimum age is five.

Your itinerary
Day by day
Five days, four nights, all at MalaMala Camp — you unpack once.
Day 1Fly in from Johannesburg+
Connect in Johannesburg for the scheduled flight into the reserve. You are met at the airstrip and transferred to MalaMala Camp, with the drive to camp often becoming your first wildlife sighting.
After lunch and time to settle in, head out in an open vehicle as the afternoon cools. Stop for sundowners, continue after dark with a spotlight, then return to camp for dinner.
Days 2–4Three full days at MalaMala+
Start before first light with coffee and a snack, then spend three to four hours on the morning drive with a bush coffee stop. Return for breakfast and an unhurried midday at camp.
Afternoon tea leads into the second drive. Pause for sundowners, then search for nocturnal wildlife on the way back to dinner. A ranger and tracker team reads the landscape together, allowing sightings to unfold without rushing the experience.
Day 5Final drive and flight to Johannesburg+
Take one last early-morning drive before breakfast. Check out and transfer to the airstrip for the included flight to Johannesburg, with onward arrangements built around your wider itinerary.

Where you stay
MalaMala Camp
Four nights at the original MalaMala camp, set closest to the Sand River.
Rooms look towards the riverbed, where wildlife moves through the reserve throughout the day. The location keeps you close to the landscape even between game drives.
MalaMala’s long photographic-safari history and experienced ranger teams are central to the stay. Morning and afternoon drives set the daily rhythm, with meals served back at camp.
Prefer a smaller or more private setting? The reserve has other camps, including Rattray’s, and Ranger Buck can quote the one that best fits your party.

“Every part of our trip, including Johannesburg, MalaMala, Victoria Falls and Cape Town, was well managed and included knowledgeable guides. The safari in MalaMala was the highlight — our guide Nick did his best to make sure we saw what we came for. Each experience was full of learning.”

“I cannot give Ranger Buck Safaris enough credit for their help in making our trip so amazing. Seven of us travelled to South Africa. They found the impossible — a ten-seater van out of East London, spotless and brand new, when no one else could. We stayed at MalaMala, at Rattray's.”

Good to know
MalaMala safari — common questions
Clear answers to the questions travellers ask before choosing this experience.
How much does a MalaMala safari cost?+
From US$5,975 per person sharing for five days and four nights at MalaMala Camp. That includes return flights from Johannesburg, accommodation, meals and guided day and night drives. The rate is indicative and varies with season, lodge availability and group size.
What is the difference between MalaMala and the Sabi Sand?+
Both are private, unfenced reserves adjoining the Kruger and both allow off-road game viewing. MalaMala is known for its long Sand River frontage and photographic-safari history dating to the 1960s. The Sabi Sand has a wider choice of lodges and price points. Ranger Buck books both.
Is there a minimum age?+
Yes. The minimum age for this MalaMala itinerary is five years. Ranger Buck will confirm any activity-specific rules for your children and travel dates before booking.
Is MalaMala a malaria area?+
Yes. The Greater Kruger is a malaria area, with generally lower risk during the dry winter months. Whether to take prophylaxis is a medical decision, so speak to your doctor or a travel clinic before travelling. Ranger Buck can also suggest malaria-free Big Five reserves such as Madikwe or Pilanesberg.
When is the best time to go?+
May to September is the dry season, with thinner vegetation, cooler mornings and excellent game viewing. October to April is greener and warmer, with migrant birds, young animals and afternoon thunderstorms. The reserve operates year-round.
