Rhino Conservation Experience
Stand beside a wildlife veterinarian as a white rhino is darted, microchipped and treated — and help do it. This is not a viewing platform. Guests hold the animal steady, monitor its breathing and record the measurements that go into South Africa’s rhino register.
A safari with a purpose
The one safari where you are asked to help
Most conservation safaris mean watching a ranger talk about conservation. This one puts you inside a live veterinary operation.
On the second morning you are briefed on rhino poaching and the anti-poaching response, then driven by private vehicle to the darting site, where a wildlife veterinarian and helicopter crew immobilise a white rhino.
What follows takes about twenty minutes and you are part of it — helping manoeuvre the animal into a safe position, monitoring vital signs, and recording information for the reserve’s conservation programme. Depending on the management plan, the work may include microchipping, DNA sampling, treatment, ear-notching, measurements or dehorning.
Around that single morning sits a genuine Big Five safari: four nights in a suite at Kapama Southern Camp, two game activities a day in open vehicles, and the reserve’s own guiding team.
Who it suits: travellers who want a safari with a purpose, photographers, families with children over 12, and guests looking for something beyond a conventional game-drive safari.

Your itinerary
Day by day
Five days, four nights, all at Kapama Southern Camp — no packing and repacking.
Day 1Arrival — Hoedspruit and into the reserve+
You are met at Eastgate Airport, Hoedspruit, by a Kapama game ranger and driven into the reserve — the transfer is already a game drive. At Southern Camp you are introduced to the team, shown to your suite and sat down to lunch.
The afternoon is yours until high tea, then out on your first game drive as the heat drops. Sundowners in the bush, a short night drive on the way back, and dinner at camp.
Day 2The rhino darting+
Coffee and something to eat before sunrise, then a briefing on rhino poaching, anti-poaching work and the veterinary plan. You are then taken by private vehicle to the darting site.
A wildlife veterinarian, working with a helicopter crew, immobilises the rhino. Once it is down and stable, guests help manoeuvre the animal into a safe position and monitor its vital signs while the team works. Depending on the reserve’s management plan, this may include microchipping, DNA sampling, treatment, ear-notching, measurements or dehorning.
When the data is captured, the antidote is administered and the team watches the rhino return safely to its feet. You return to camp before the afternoon game drive, sundowners and dinner.
Day 3Big Five game viewing+
Early safari with a coffee stop out in the reserve, or a slow morning if you would rather. A proper breakfast on your return, then the pool or spa through the middle of the day.
Afternoon high tea is followed by the second drive, sundowners at a spot chosen by your ranger, a night drive back, and dinner at camp.
Day 4A second full day in the reserve+
The same shape as Day 3, which is the point of a four-night stay: enough time that the reserve stops being a checklist. Guided bush walks are available on request for guests aged 16 and over.
Early drive, breakfast, downtime, high tea, afternoon drive, sundowners, night drive and dinner.
Day 5Last morning and the flight home+
One more early game drive with coffee and snacks in the bush, then brunch back at camp. Check out, transfer to Hoedspruit Airport, and take your included flight back to Johannesburg — in time to connect to Cape Town, Victoria Falls or an international departure.

Rhino conservation safari — common questions
Clear answers to the questions travellers ask before choosing this experience.
How much does the rhino conservation experience cost?+
From US$11,859 per person sharing for five days and four nights at Kapama Southern Camp. That includes return scheduled flights between Johannesburg and Hoedspruit, accommodation, all meals, teas, snacks, local drinks and house wines, two daily safari activities and the conservation experience. This is an indicative rate — your final price is confirmed on quotation and varies with season, lodge availability and group size.
Am I guaranteed to take part in a rhino darting?+
No. Darting operations are veterinary and conservation work, not scheduled entertainment. They happen when the reserve’s management plan calls for them and conditions allow. Ranger Buck plans your stay around a confirmed operation wherever possible and will explain the likelihood and alternatives before you book.
What is the minimum age?+
The minimum age for the safari and conservation experience is 12. Guided bush walks are for guests aged 16 and over. Ask the team to confirm the rules for your exact dates and family group.
When is the best time to go?+
May to September is the dry season, with thinner vegetation, cooler mornings and excellent game viewing. October to April is greener and warmer, with migrant birds, newborn animals and afternoon thunderstorms. Kapama operates year-round.
Is Kapama a malaria area?+
Kapama is classed as a low-risk malaria region, with lower risk during the dry winter months. Whether to take prophylaxis is a medical decision, so speak to your doctor or a travel clinic before travelling. Ranger Buck can also suggest malaria-free safari options.
