A safari that happens on water as much as on land
The Okavango is a river that never reaches the sea.
It empties into the Kalahari and floods a wetland the size of a small country, and the wildlife concentrates around it. That is why the delta is the one African safari that is different in kind rather than degree.
This itinerary puts you in two camps in two distinct parts of it. The first two nights are at Saguni Safari Lodge overlooking the Sable River in the Khwai Community Area, on the eastern edge of Moremi. The last two are at Kadizora Camp in the NG12 concession, a private section of delta reached by a second light-aircraft hop.
Both camps run two activities a day, and the mix is the point: a morning game drive, an afternoon mokoro through the reed channels, a boat cruise when the water is high. You are moved between them by light aircraft, which is also the only way to see the scale of the place.
Botswana runs a deliberate low-volume, high-value tourism model, so there are fewer vehicles and fewer people than in the Kruger reserves. That is reflected in the price.
Who it suits: travellers on a second or third safari who want something structurally different, photographers, and anyone who has decided the Kruger is too busy. The minimum age is twelve — this is not a young-family trip.

Day by day
Five days, four nights, two camps. All internal flights included.
Day 1Fly in to Khwai, and straight onto the water+
A pre-flight briefing from your pilot-guide in Maun, then the flight in to Saguni Safari Lodge, which overlooks the Sable River on the eastern side of Moremi. The flight is low and slow enough to be the first game viewing of the trip.
Check in, then an afternoon mokoro safari through the delta channels — poled, silent, at eye level with the water. Dinner at the lodge.
Day 2A full day in the Khwai Community Area+
Out early on a game drive or a mokoro, then back for breakfast and the pool through the middle of the day.
Afternoon high tea, then the second activity — a game drive or a boat safari depending on the water. Sundowners over the delta, then dinner.
Day 3Fly deeper, to the NG12 concession+
A final morning game drive at Saguni and breakfast, then a light-aircraft flight to Kadizora Camp in a private section of the delta.
The afternoon is for settling in — tents, pool, and the quiet. Sundowners, dinner under the stars, and storytelling round the campfire.
Day 4Water and land at Kadizora+
An early game drive, a boat cruise or a mokoro safari, then a long brunch and time at leisure.
Afternoon high tea, the second activity of the day, sundowners, and dinner under the stars again.
Day 5Last activity and the flight out+
One final early game drive or mokoro safari, breakfast, then check out and the charter flight back — with the delta laid out underneath you on the way.

Saguni Lodge & Kadizora Camp
Two camps, deliberately. Saguni Safari Lodge for two nights in the Khwai Community Area, on the Sable River. Kadizora Camp for two nights in the NG12 concession, a private delta section.
Both are full board plus — all meals, teas and snacks, and a selection of local drinks. Laundry is included at up to two items per person per stay.

The delta has camps at every level from mobile tented to ultra-luxury. This pairing is mid-range and gets you into two areas rather than one. Tell your consultant the budget and it can move either way.

How much does an Okavango Delta safari cost?+
From US$4,490 per person sharing for five days and four nights across two delta camps, including the light-aircraft flights, all meals and two safari activities a day. Botswana is more expensive than South Africa for the same standard of camp, because the country runs a deliberate low-volume tourism model and charges accordingly. Because every trip is tailored, your final quote may come in above or below that figure.
What is a mokoro, and do we spend the whole trip on water?+
A mokoro is a shallow dugout canoe, poled from the back by a guide standing up. It is silent, it sits low, and it gets into channels no vehicle reaches. You do not spend the whole trip in one — the camps run two activities a day and alternate between game drives, mokoro trips and motorboat cruises depending on the water level and what you want. In high flood there is more water; in the dry months more driving.
When is the best time to go?+
Counter-intuitively, the delta floods in the dry season. The water arrives from Angola around May and peaks between June and August, which is when the mokoro and boat activities are at their best and the game concentrates on the islands. That is peak season and priced accordingly. December to March is green, hot and much cheaper, with more birds, more newborn animals, and less water.
Is there a minimum age?+
Twelve years. Delta camps are generally unfenced and the activities involve water, which is why the limit is higher than at a fenced South African reserve. If you are travelling with younger children, Madikwe and Pilanesberg are malaria-free and take them, and Kapama River Lodge takes children from six.
Is Botswana a malaria area?+
Yes, the delta is a malaria area, and the risk is higher in the wet summer months. This is a genuine consideration rather than a formality — speak to a travel clinic well before you travel. If you would rather avoid it entirely, the Madikwe and Pilanesberg safaris are in malaria-free reserves.
