One morning on this trip is not a game drive
On day two you are out before sunrise with a wildlife veterinarian, and by mid-morning you have your hands on a sedated white rhino while its horn is microchipped and its ear notched.
Everything else on this itinerary is the best version of a familiar thing — a 13,000-hectare private reserve with twice-daily drives, four nights on the V&A Waterfront with the Peninsula and the Winelands done privately, and Victoria Falls with a Zambezi sunset cruise and a full day on the Chobe. Those are the reasons most people book eleven days in Southern Africa.
The conservation morning is the reason they remember it. It is a real veterinary operation, run by Kapama's own team, and you are not watching it from a vehicle. It is also the single largest line in the price, and the honest way to think about this trip is that you are buying that morning and building a very good eleven days around it.
Who it suits: travellers who want one genuinely unusual experience rather than a longer list of ordinary ones, and who are comfortable with a fairly full schedule. It suits couples and small family groups. It does not suit anyone looking for a slow, single-lodge safari — you change country twice and fly four times.

Your Southern Africa safari, day by day
Four internal flights are included — Johannesburg to Hoedspruit, Hoedspruit to Cape Town, Cape Town to Victoria Falls, and Victoria Falls back to Johannesburg — along with every airport transfer.
Day 1Arrive — Kapama Karula, Greater Kruger+
Arrive at O.R. Tambo International in Johannesburg and connect on the included flight to Eastgate Airport, Hoedspruit. A Kapama driver meets you and transfers you to Karula, roughly forty-five minutes through the reserve.
Time to settle in before lunch, then afternoon tea and your first game drive with a ranger and tracker. Sundowners are served in the bush, and the drive continues after dark with a spotlight to look for nocturnal species. Dinner at the lodge.
Lunch, dinner and all drinks except champagne are included from this point until you leave Kapama.
Day 2The rhino conservation morning+
An early start, before sunrise, to join Kapama's wildlife veterinarian. You are briefed on rhino poaching and on the safety procedure before the team locates and darts the animal from a helicopter.
Once the rhino is down and blindfolded, guests help. That means helping position the animal, monitoring its breathing and vital signs, standing by while horn microchips are drilled and inserted or a dehorning is carried out where the reserve has decided one is needed, applying medication, notching the ear, and recording measurements. The team then reverses the sedation and the rhino gets back on its feet.
Back to the lodge for the rest of the day, with an afternoon game drive and dinner as usual.
This is veterinary work on wild animals, not a scheduled attraction. Ranger Buck books it as a fixed part of this itinerary, but the exact day can move if the vet team or the weather requires it.
Day 3Kapama Karula+
Early morning safari with coffee and rusks, and a mid-drive stop somewhere quiet in the bush. Full breakfast on your return, then the day is yours — the spa, the pool on your villa deck, or simply the view over the Klaserie.
Afternoon tea, then the second game drive, sundowners, and a short spotlit drive back. Dinner at the lodge.
Guided bush walks are available to guests aged sixteen and over.
Day 4To Cape Town — InterContinental Table Bay+
A final morning drive and breakfast, then check out and transfer to Hoedspruit for the included flight to Cape Town. You are met on arrival and driven to the hotel on the V&A Waterfront.
The rest of the day is free. The Waterfront is on the doorstep — restaurants, the aquarium, the shops — and dinner tonight is on your own account.
From here to the end of the trip your rate is bed and breakfast. Lunches and dinners are yours except where this itinerary says otherwise.
Day 5Cape Town city tour and Table Mountain+
Breakfast at the hotel, then a private city tour. The cableway to the summit of Table Mountain is included, weather permitting, with views over the city, the bay and across to Robben Island.
The tour continues through the Bo-Kaap, past the Castle of Good Hope, Parliament and the Company's Garden, then out along Sea Point and Camps Bay.
Afternoon and evening free.
Day 6Cape Peninsula+
A full private day down the peninsula — Hout Bay, then Chapman's Peak Drive if the road is open, the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.
At Cape Point the funicular takes you up to the old lighthouse. Back to the city in the late afternoon; the evening is free.
Entry fees to the reserve and the penguin colony are included; lunch is on your own account.
Day 7The Winelands+
A private full day in the Cape Winelands. At Waterford Estate you take their wine drive through the vineyards, and in the afternoon there is a Cap Classique and nougat pairing at Anthonij Rupert — three wines matched with handmade nougat.
Tastings are included; lunch is on your own account. The rest of the evening is free.
Day 8To Victoria Falls — Mbano Manor+
Breakfast, check out and transfer to Cape Town International for the included flight to Victoria Falls. You clear immigration into Zimbabwe — your visa is your own arrangement — and a driver takes you the short distance to Mbano Manor in the teak forest.
This evening you are collected for dinner at the Boma at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, with return transfers included.
Day 9The Falls and a Zambezi sunset+
Breakfast, then a guided tour of the Falls on foot with a qualified guide who covers the geology, the history and the birdlife along the rainforest path. Raincoats are provided; you will get wet. There is an optional stop at the Big Tree.
Lunch is a two-course meal at The Lookout Restaurant and is included.
Late afternoon, a sunset cruise on the Zambezi — hippo, crocodile and usually elephant on the banks — with snacks and drinks on board.
Day 10Chobe National Park, Botswana+
An early start for the drive to Kasane and the Botswana border, roughly an hour to ninety minutes plus the crossing. A river safari on the Chobe in the morning — this stretch carries one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, along with hippo, crocodile and a great deal of birdlife.
Lunch by the river, then an afternoon game drive in an open vehicle in the national park before the drive back to Mbano Manor in the late afternoon.
Transfers, park fees and lunch are included. The Botswana border crossing can take time; bring your passport and allow for it.
Day 11Departure+
Breakfast and check out, then a transfer to Victoria Falls International for the included flight back to O.R. Tambo, Johannesburg, where you connect with your international departure.
Days 1–3 · South Africa
Kapama Karula, Greater Kruger
Twelve suites on the Klaserie River inside a 13,000-hectare private reserve. The rate books a Superior Luxury Villa — around 100 square metres with its own heated plunge pool — on a full board plus basis, which here means all meals, all activities and all drinks except champagne.
Two of Karula's twelve suites are purpose-built for families. If you are travelling with children, say so at enquiry — the family villas are a different rate and there are only two of them.

The rhino conservation morning
A working veterinary procedure on a wild white rhino, run by Kapama's own team. Guests take part — positioning the animal, monitoring its breathing, microchipping the horn, notching the ear, taking measurements. These are Ranger Buck's own photographs from the experience.
What the morning actually looks like
This is a real procedure, so it carries real conditions. The date can move if the veterinary team's schedule or the weather requires it, and what is done on the day — microchipping, treatment, notching, dehorning — is decided by the reserve according to what that animal needs, not by what guests would like to see. Nobody can promise you a specific rhino or a specific outcome. What is guaranteed is that the experience is booked and paid for as part of this itinerary.

Cape Town, on the waterfront
Four nights at the InterContinental Table Bay on the V&A Waterfront, bed and breakfast, with three full private touring days — the city and Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula, and the Winelands.
Three private touring days
All three touring days are private, not group departures, and entry fees for Table Mountain, Cape Point and Boulders Beach are included. Winelands tastings are included. Lunches on those days are not, and neither are drinks.
Days 8–10 · Zimbabwe & Botswana
Victoria Falls, the Zambezi and the Chobe
Three nights at Mbano Manor, a suites-only hotel in a teak forest four kilometres from the Falls, bed and breakfast. Three activity days: the Falls on foot, a Zambezi sunset cruise, and a full day across the border in Chobe National Park.

Two borders, two visas, both your own arrangement. You enter Zimbabwe on day 8 and cross into Botswana and back on day 10. Ranger Buck does not apply for visas on your behalf and the KAZA UniVisa is not included in the price. Check what your passport needs well before you travel, and allow time at the Kasane border post — it is not quick.

How much does this trip cost?+
From US$17,780 per person sharing for 11 days and 10 nights, and from US$28,410 travelling single. Because every trip is tailored, your final quote may come in above or below that figure — season moves it most, followed by room category and how many of you are travelling. The single largest fixed cost inside the price is the rhino conservation morning.
Why does the trip start in Johannesburg when the safari is in Hoedspruit?+
Because the internal flight to Hoedspruit leaves from Johannesburg, and because ending in Victoria Falls means the cleanest way home is a flight back to O.R. Tambo. Your international ticket should be booked into and out of Johannesburg. If you would rather fly in or out of Cape Town, say so at enquiry — the itinerary can be reordered, but the internal flights and the lodge nights all shift with it, so it needs to be quoted rather than assumed.
What actually happens on the rhino conservation morning?+
You leave before sunrise with Kapama's wildlife veterinarian and are briefed on the procedure and on rhino poaching. The animal is located and darted from a helicopter. Once it is down and blindfolded, guests help position it, monitor its breathing and vital signs, apply medication, notch the ear and record measurements, and are present while horn microchips are inserted or a dehorning is carried out if the reserve has decided one is needed. The sedation is then reversed and the rhino gets up and walks off. It is a working procedure, so the date can move and what is done is decided by the reserve, not by guests.
Can we bring children?+
Yes — there is no minimum age on this itinerary. Guided bush walks at Kapama are for guests aged sixteen and over, and two of Karula's twelve suites are purpose-built for families, so a family booking usually means a room upgrade there. Tell Ranger Buck the ages at enquiry and the family villa and any additional rooms will be quoted with the rest.
Do I need visas for Zimbabwe and Botswana?+
Almost certainly, and they are your own arrangement. Ranger Buck does not apply on your behalf and no visa fees are included in the price — that includes the KAZA UniVisa, which covers Zimbabwe and Zambia and is often the practical choice. Requirements depend entirely on your passport, so check with the relevant embassy well before you travel. You cross into Botswana and back on day 10, and the Kasane border post is not quick.
Is this a malaria area?+
Parts of it. The Greater Kruger, where Kapama sits, is a low-risk malaria area, as are Victoria Falls and Chobe. Cape Town is malaria-free. Risk is seasonal and lowest in the dry winter months, which is also the best game-viewing season. Speak to a travel clinic or your doctor about prophylaxis — it is commonly recommended for this routing — and use the repellent and long sleeves the lodges provide at dusk.
When is the best time to go?+
May to September is the strongest overall window: dry season in the Greater Kruger means thinner bush and better game viewing, Chobe's elephants concentrate on the river, and malaria risk is at its lowest. The trade-off is the Falls, which peak in volume from March to June and are at their lowest around October and November. If seeing the Falls in full flood matters most, aim for May or June — it is the one month range that does both well.
