Private reserve safari

Why people choose Sabi Sands over the Kruger

The Sabi Sand Nature Reserve is private land on the Kruger’s western boundary, with no fence between them. The animals move freely; the safari rules are what change.

Vehicles may drive off-road to follow a sighting, there are no self-drive day visitors, and each lodge limits how many vehicles attend the same animal. In practice, that means you are not queuing behind a long line of cars for a leopard.

This trip puts you at Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge for three nights on full board plus, with two game activities a day in open vehicles, walking safaris with an armed guide, and a short spotlight drive on the way back each evening.

You fly from Johannesburg to Skukuza in about an hour rather than spending most of a day on the road, allowing you to be out on your first game drive that afternoon.

Who it suits: first-time safari travellers who want a strong chance of seeing the Big Five in a short window, photographers, couples and families.

A short safari without a wasted travel day. The included flights make a three-night Sabi Sand stay practical and easy to combine with Cape Town or Victoria Falls.

Your itinerary

Day by day

Four days, three nights, all at Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge — you unpack once.

Day 1Fly in, and straight out on a drive

Arrive at OR Tambo and connect to the scheduled flight to Skukuza — roughly an hour over the Lowveld. You are met on landing and transferred through the reserve to Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge, which is a game drive in itself.

Enjoy a light lunch on the deck, then settle in before high tea. Your first open-vehicle drive begins as the heat drops, followed by a short night drive, dinner and a fire back at the lodge.

Days 2–3Two full days in the reserve

Both days follow the same unhurried safari rhythm. Coffee and a snack before sunrise are followed by the morning drive and a bush coffee stop. Return for breakfast, then spend the heat of the day on the deck, at the pool or in the Amani Spa.

Environmental-awareness walking safaris with an armed guide are available. Afternoon tea leads into the second drive, sundowners and a spotlight drive back to the lodge — prime time for leopards and other nocturnal wildlife.

Day 4Last drive and the flight back

Take one final morning game drive, then enjoy a long breakfast. Check out and transfer to Skukuza Airport for the included flight to Johannesburg, timed to connect with Cape Town, Victoria Falls or an international departure.

Where you stay

Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge

Limited laundry and Wi-Fi are also included. French champagne, Private Collection cellar wines, dry cleaning and spa treatments are charged separately.

Bush Lodge is the most family-friendly of the Sabi Sabi camps, with a large pool, the Amani Spa, and a deck overlooking the reserve. It sits in the southern section of the Sabi Sand, an area known for long-established leopard territories.

Prefer a smaller camp or a different lodge? Sabi Sabi operates four lodges at different price points, and Ranger Buck books throughout the Sabi Sand.

Good to know

Sabi Sands safari — common questions

Clear answers to the questions travellers ask before choosing this experience.

How much does a Sabi Sands safari cost?

From US$7,043 per person sharing for four days and three nights at Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge. That includes return flights from Johannesburg, accommodation, all meals, most drinks and two game activities a day. This is an indicative rate — your final price is confirmed on quotation and varies with season, lodge availability and group size.

What is the difference between Sabi Sands and Kruger National Park?

They share an unfenced border and the same wildlife, but the safari rules differ. Kruger visitors stay on the roads and may self-drive. In the Sabi Sand, guides may drive off-road to follow an animal, there are no day visitors, and lodges limit the number of vehicles at a sighting. If budget matters more than exclusivity, Kruger remains an excellent alternative and Ranger Buck books it too.

Is Sabi Sands a malaria area?

Yes. The Greater Kruger, including the Sabi Sand, is a low-risk malaria area, with lower risk during the dry winter months. Whether to take prophylaxis is a medical decision, so speak to your doctor or a travel clinic before travelling. Ranger Buck can also suggest malaria-free Big Five reserves.

Is there a minimum age?

Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge accepts children of all ages. Younger children may be restricted from certain activities, and families may require a private vehicle. Walking safaris are for adults. Ranger Buck will confirm the applicable rules for your family and dates.

When is the best time to go?

May to September is the dry season, with thinner vegetation, cooler mornings and excellent game viewing. October to April is greener and warmer, with migrant birds, newborn animals and afternoon thunderstorms. The reserve operates year-round.
