Timbavati Luxury Fly-In Safari
Three nights at Kings Camp in the Timbavati — the quieter side of the Greater Kruger, with fewer lodges spread across more ground than the reserves to the south, and the same animals moving across the same unfenced country.
Private reserve safari
The Greater Kruger without the traffic
The Timbavati sits on the western edge of the Kruger, north of the Sabi Sand, and there is no fence between them.
It is the same ecosystem and the same animals — but there are fewer lodges spread across more ground, which shows up in the one way that matters on a game drive: how many other vehicles are at the sighting.
Kings Camp is one of the older establishments in the reserve. Drives go out in open-sided 4x4s morning and evening, with a stop for coffee or sundowners out in the bush.
One thing worth being straight about, because it is the practical difference between this trip and the Sabi Sands one: the game vehicle here is shared with other lodge guests. That keeps the price roughly 25% below a comparable Sabi Sands trip. If you want a vehicle to yourselves, Ranger Buck can arrange it as a supplement — just ask.
Who it suits: travellers who want serious Big Five game viewing without the Sabi Sands price, families with children over six, and anyone who has already seen the busier reserves and wants somewhere quieter. It combines easily with Cape Town or Victoria Falls on the same trip.

A day at Kings Camp
Kings Camp’s own film follows the rhythm of a day in the Timbavati — the early drive, the middle of the day at camp, and the second drive out until after dark.

Your itinerary
Day by day
Four days, three nights, all at Kings Camp — you unpack once.
Day 1Fly in, and out on the afternoon drive+
Fly from Johannesburg into the reserve and transfer to Kings Camp. Settle in and eat, then head out on the first drive as the afternoon cools.
Open-sided 4x4, a ranger and a tracker, and a stop in the bush for sundowners before the drive home in the dark. Dinner at camp.
Days 2–3Two full days of game viewing+
The rhythm repeats, which is the point of three nights: a morning drive leaving before sunrise with a coffee stop out in the reserve, breakfast on your return, and the heat of the day free at the lodge.
Afternoon tea, then the second drive out until after dark, with spotlights on the way back for the nocturnal animals. Dinner and bed.
Both drives each day are included, and they are where the Big Five viewing happens. The Timbavati carries good numbers of lion, elephant and buffalo, and leopard sightings are consistent — if less certain than in the reserves along the Sand River.
Day 4Last drive and the flight back+
One final morning drive, breakfast at the camp, then check out and transfer to the airstrip for the flight to Johannesburg — timed to connect onward the same day.

Where you stay
Kings Camp
Three nights at Kings Camp, a classic-style Timbavati lodge rather than a contemporary one — thatch, verandas and a waterhole in front of the main deck.
The main lodge opens onto a sunken boma and fire pit, and the suites are thatched and generously sized, each with its own veranda and plunge pool.
Meals are as specified in the itinerary rather than fully inclusive, so the drinks and dining arrangements are worth confirming at quotation.
Kings Camp is one of several lodges Ranger Buck books in the Timbavati and the neighbouring Klaserie — guests have also had very good trips at Bateleur, Misava, Amaya and Kateka. Tell your consultant the budget and the feel you want.

“When looking to book a two-and-a-half-week trip to South Africa, we did not really know where to begin. Archie immediately got in touch and scheduled a call to talk us through our options. He is super knowledgeable and was attentive throughout. We stayed at Kings Camp and our guide JP came highly recommended.”

Good to know
Timbavati safari — common questions
Clear answers to the questions travellers ask before choosing this experience.
How much does a Timbavati safari cost?+
From US$5,317 per person sharing for four days and three nights at Kings Camp, including return flights from Johannesburg, meals as specified and two game drives a day. That sits roughly 25% below a comparable Sabi Sands trip, largely because the game vehicle is shared rather than private. Because Ranger Buck tailors every trip, your final quote may come in above or below that figure.
Will we have the vehicle to ourselves?+
Not as standard. The trip is a private booking, but the game drives are shared with other Kings Camp guests — usually a handful of people in an open-sided 4x4. That is the main reason the price sits below the private-vehicle reserves. A private vehicle can be arranged as a supplement, and for a family or a group of four or more it is often worth it. Ask and Ranger Buck will price it.
How does the Timbavati compare with the Sabi Sand?+
Same unfenced ecosystem, same animals, fewer lodges over more ground — so generally fewer vehicles at a sighting. The Sabi Sand and MalaMala hold the Sand River frontage, which gives them the edge on leopard specifically. The Timbavati is the better value and the quieter experience; the southern reserves are the stronger bet if leopard is the single thing you have come for. Ranger Buck books all of them and will say honestly which fits.
Is there a minimum age?+
Six years for this Kings Camp itinerary. If you are travelling with younger children, Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge in the Sabi Sand takes children of any age, and Madikwe and Pilanesberg are malaria-free — all three are better fits and Ranger Buck books them.
When is the best time to go?+
May to September is the dry season — sparse bush, animals concentrated at water, cold early mornings and almost no rain. It is the easiest viewing of the year. October to April is green, warm and much better for birds and newborn animals, with afternoon thunderstorms and thicker cover. The reserve operates year-round.
