Welcome to the Ranger Buck Safaris journal. In this edition we head into the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve — a vast wilderness inside the Greater Kruger ecosystem, known for exceptional wildlife, low-density safari experiences and an honest connection to the African bush.
A wilderness without borders
The Timbavati forms part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem, and its boundaries are open. Wildlife moves naturally between the reserve and the conservation areas around it, which is what makes the safari here feel unmanaged in the best sense — elephant, lion, leopard, wild dog and a great deal else range across an immense landscape rather than a fenced block.
The Timbavati holds a particular place in African conservation history: this is where the first recorded sightings of the rare white lions were made. Their appearance and their genetics have made them the reserve’s most celebrated animals.
Sightings are never guaranteed. But knowing they are out there adds something to every game drive.

- Listen for alarm calls — they usually mean something is about to happen.
- Watch behaviour rather than waiting for the next animal.
- Learn the plants and the small creatures that hold the whole system together.
Because the most rewarding safari moments are rarely the ones anybody planned for.
Afterwards you return to an intimate lodge where the pace slows further again: a properly prepared meal, a drink looking out over the bush, and then the fire, as the sounds of the African night start up.
