Sabi Sands Luxury Fly-in Safari (3 Nights) | Ranger Buck

Ultimate Sabi Sand Fly-In Safari Package

The quickest, most comfortable way to reach the world’s best leopard territory.

Don’t Waste a Day on the Road

The drive from Johannesburg to the Sabi Sand Reserve is nearly 6 hours long. We designed this Fly-In Package for travelers who value their time. By utilizing private Federal Air (FedAir) shuttles, we turn a grueling transfer into a scenic 50-minute flight.

The Difference: If you drive, you miss the afternoon game drive on Day 1. If you fly, you land on the lodge’s private airstrip by 12:30 PM, have a leisurely lunch, and are on the vehicle tracking the Big 5 by 4:00 PM. This itinerary buys you an extra half-day of safari.

Curator Notes: The “Federal Air” Experience

We include Federal Air flights in this package because they offer a VIP experience that commercial airlines cannot match:

  • The Lounge: You check in at the private FedAir terminal at O.R. Tambo (JNB). There are no long security lines. You enjoy complimentary snacks, coffee, and showers before your flight.

  • The Flight: The Cessna Grand Caravans fly lower than commercial jets, offering you a “Scenic Tour” over the Mpumalanga escarpment before you even reach the reserve.

  • The Landing: You land on a gravel strip deep inside the bush. It is not uncommon to see impala or zebras clearing off the runway as you approach.

Itinerary Overview (4 Days / 3 Nights)

Day 1: The VIP Arrival

Johannesburg to the Bush

Meet our representative at the Federal Air Lounge at O.R. Tambo. Board your flight and enjoy the views. Upon landing at the Sabi Sand airstrip (Ulusaba, Skukuza, or Arathusa depending on your lodge choice), your ranger will be waiting to drive you to the lodge.

  • 13:00: Lunch overlooking the waterhole.

  • 16:00: Your first Sunset Game Drive.

  • 19:30: Boma Dinner.

💡 Ranger’s Tip: Keep your camera in your hand luggage on the plane. The approach into the Sabi Sand offers incredible aerial views of the landscape.

Days 2-3: Deep Immersion

Big 5 Tracking

With no travel logistics to worry about, these days are pure safari.

  • 05:30: Wake-up call & coffee.

  • 06:00: Morning Game Drive (finding the predators while they are still active).

  • 09:30: Full Breakfast.

  • 11:00: Bush walk (optional) or pool time.

  • 16:00: Afternoon/Night Drive (tracking nocturnal animals).

💡 Ranger’s Tip: Since you flew in, you are fresh and rested. We recommend taking the optional “Bush Walk” after breakfast. Seeing the bush on foot gives you a completely different perspective than the vehicle.

Day 4: The Scenic Return

One Last Look

Enjoy a final morning game drive and breakfast. Your ranger will drive you back to the airstrip for your flight back to Johannesburg. You will land at O.R. Tambo in time for your international connection home.

Vital Logistics (Must Read)

Luggage Restrictions (The “Soft Bag” Rule) Because light aircraft are used, strict luggage rules apply.

  • Limit: 20kg (44lbs) per person including hand luggage.

  • Type: You must use soft-sided bags (duffel bags) with no rigid frames. Hard-shell suitcases will not fit in the majestic cargo pod.

  • Storage: If you have excess luggage, we provide free secure storage at the FedAir terminal in Johannesburg for your return.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What happens if my international flight is late? We recommend landing in Johannesburg (JNB) no later than 09:30 AM to connect with the 10:30 AM / 11:30 AM safari flights. If you arrive later, we may need to arrange a private charter or an overnight stay in JNB. We monitor all flights to assist with connections.

2. Can I bring my hard suitcase? No. The pilots are very strict about this for safety and weight balance. Please use a soft duffel bag. We can store your hard suitcases at the airport for you free of charge.

3. Is the flight turbulent? Small aircraft can be more sensitive to wind than large jets, especially in the afternoon heat. If you suffer from motion sickness, we recommend taking medication 30 minutes before departure. The morning flights are usually very smooth.

4. Which lodges do you use? We tailor this package to your budget. Common favorites for the Fly-In package include Lion Sands, Sabi Sabi, Dulini, and MalaMala.
