African Wildlife Conservation Experiences

Authentic African Safaris Centered Around Conservation

Ranger Buck Safaris offers a collection of hands-on wildlife conservation experiences across Southern Africa that go far beyond a traditional game drive. Each experience is led by professional wildlife veterinarians, field rangers and conservation specialists, and gives you the rare opportunity to assist directly with real conservation operations in the field.

From helping dart and microchip a rhino to monitoring wild dog pack movements, supporting elephant identification work, and contributing to emerging programmes protecting hyenas and pangolins, these are meaningful encounters that contribute directly to the protection of Africa’s most threatened species. Every conservation safari we arrange is carried out under strict ethical protocols, with the welfare of the animal always the highest priority.

Whether you choose to focus your trip on a single species or combine multiple conservation experiences into one tailor-made itinerary, you’ll leave knowing your visit made a tangible difference.

Our Wildlife Conservation Experiences

Rhino Conservation

Rhino poaching remains one of Africa’s most urgent conservation crises, with three of the five rhino species now critically endangered. Our rhino conservation experience gives you exclusive, supervised access to a live darting and research operation. Working alongside a wildlife veterinarian and field team, you’ll help attach tracking devices, take DNA samples, administer treatment and monitor vital signs — contributing directly to anti-poaching intelligence and species monitoring. This is the flagship experience in our conservation programme and one of the most sought-after wildlife encounters in South Africa.

Elephant Conservation

African elephants face mounting pressure from poaching, habitat loss and increasing human–wildlife conflict. Through our elephant conservation experience, you’ll join a field team working on the ground to protect these gentle giants. Depending on what is scheduled during your visit, activities may include supporting identification and tracking work, learning how human–elephant conflict is managed in practice, and assisting with data collection that informs long-term herd protection strategies across Southern Africa.

Wild Dog Conservation

The African wild dog is one of the continent’s most endangered carnivores, with fewer than 6 600 individuals remaining in fragmented populations. Our wild dog conservation experience brings you into close contact with these remarkable pack hunters during active fieldwork. You’ll assist conservation teams with tasks such as monitoring pack dynamics, supporting collar-fitting operations and helping gather data that is critical to maintaining viable wild dog populations in protected reserves.

Lion Conservation

Africa’s lion populations have declined by more than 40% over the past two decades, driven by habitat loss, human–wildlife conflict and prey depletion. Our lion conservation experience allows you to support the vital fieldwork being carried out to understand and protect remaining lion populations. Work alongside conservation professionals as they carry out monitoring, research and management operations aimed at securing a future for these iconic predators.

Hyena Conservation

Spotted hyenas are among Africa’s most misunderstood and unfairly persecuted predators. Despite playing a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through scavenging and predation, hyena populations face serious threats from habitat fragmentation, snaring and human–wildlife conflict. Our hyena conservation experience takes you behind the scenes with field researchers working to change perceptions and protect hyena clans. You’ll learn how these highly intelligent, socially complex animals are monitored and managed, and contribute to the research that is helping shift conservation priorities in their favour.

Pangolin Conservation

Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals on earth, and all eight species are now threatened with extinction. These shy, nocturnal creatures are poached at devastating scale for their scales and meat, making pangolin conservation one of the most pressing wildlife challenges on the continent. Our pangolin conservation experience offers a rare and deeply moving encounter with these elusive animals. Working alongside specialist conservationists, you’ll gain insight into rescue, rehabilitation and release programmes, and learn what is being done on the ground to combat the illegal wildlife trade that threatens their survival.

Rhino Conservation Experience

With ever growing risk from poaching, rhino conservation is more important than ever. Through this wildlife experience, you can help our team of specialists with a variety of conservation efforts aimed at protecting rhinos. These creatures deserve to be a part of the ecosafaris of future generations.

Elephant Conservation Experience

Often maimed for their precious ivory, the wondrous elephants deserves to be protected from such cruelty. Help our team with their efforts to protect these gentle giants, and get directly involved with elephant conservation. No African wildlife experience would be complete without these massive masters of the veldt.
