Best Time to Visit Africa for a Safari — from the UAE

When to go, and how to escape the Gulf summer

There’s no single best time for a safari — only the best time for what you want to see and how you want to travel. And there’s good news for Gulf travellers: peak game-viewing season lines up almost perfectly with the time you most want to leave the summer heat behind.

Here’s how the seasons play out, from a team that plans trips through all of them.

The Gulf-summer advantage

Southern Africa’s dry winter (roughly May–September) is the best time for game viewing — sparse vegetation, animals gathering at water — and it falls exactly when the Gulf is at its hottest. A safari then means swapping 45°C days for cool, clear mornings in the bush.

“Ranger Buck put together a great itinerary at fantastic facilities! Wonderful service from beginning to end.”

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time for a safari from the UAE?
The dry winter months (May–September) offer the best game viewing and a welcome escape from the Gulf summer heat. April and October are lovely, quieter shoulder windows.

When is the Great Migration?
River crossings in the Maasai Mara and Serengeti are typically best from July to October — through the Gulf summer.

Is the green season worth it?
Yes — lush scenery, newborn animals, great birding, fewer crowds and often better rates.

Dry season vs green season

The dry season is peak wildlife; the green summer months (November–March) bring lush landscapes, newborn animals, superb birding and often better value. Both are wonderful — it depends what you’re after.

Migration and Victoria Falls timing

For the Great Migration river crossings in Kenya and Tanzania, aim for roughly July–October. For Victoria Falls in full flow, February–May. Eid and school holidays also shape when Gulf families travel; we’ll line it all up for you.

  • Escape the Gulf summer — dry season (May–Sept), best game viewing.
  • Great Migration crossings — Jul–Oct.
  • Victoria Falls at full power — Feb–May.
  • Green-season value & birding — Nov–Mar.
