What to pack, and what to leave at home
Packing for a safari is easier than it looks once you know the rules — chief among them the weight limits on light aircraft if you’re flying into camp. Pack light, pack neutral, and you’ll be comfortable throughout.
Here’s our practical, field-tested list for UK travellers.
Clothing and the layering rule
Mornings are cold, middays warm, so layer. Stick to neutral tones (khaki, olive, brown), avoid bright colours and white, and skip camouflage. A warm fleece and a windproof layer matter for open-vehicle drives — the UK-winter dry season can be genuinely chilly at dawn.

What colours should I wear on safari?
Neutral tones — khaki, olive, brown. Avoid bright colours, white (shows dust) and camouflage.
How much luggage can I bring on a fly-in safari?
Usually around 15–20kg in soft-sided bags. We’ll confirm your route’s exact limit, and lodges offer laundry.
Do I need a plug adaptor?
Yes — South Africa mainly uses the Type M three-pin plug, so bring a UK-to-SA adaptor. We’ll remind you before you go.
Camera, health and essentials
Bring your camera and plenty of memory and battery; binoculars transform game viewing. Pack any personal medication, insect repellent, and a small first-aid kit. Lodges handle laundry, so you can pack less than you think.
Fly-in luggage limits
Light aircraft usually cap luggage at around 15–20kg in soft-sided bags. We’ll send the exact limit for your route — and because lodges offer laundry, packing light is genuinely easy.
