Returning to Rwanda

This past month ended in the most extraordinary way imaginable as we embarked on one of our first international trips since the start of the global pandemic. With Rwanda’s borders having recently opened up again for international visitors, we jumped on the opportunity to make our way back to this spectacular travel destination to visit some of our partner lodges and take part in one of Rwanda’s infamous gorilla tracking experiences.

Our Rwandan expedition started in the fascinating capital city of Kigali where we spent our first night settling into the secluded luxury and warm, welcoming charm of the spectacular Villa Kigali. After a much needed night’s rest, we made our way out of the city and up into the pristine Virunga Mountains towards our next destination – Singita Kwitonda Lodge. This beautifully secluded private lodge, consisting of eight luxurious private suites, sits right on the edge of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National park and would serve as the base from which we would conduct our gorilla trekking expedition.

We were up early the next morning with eager anticipation and shortly after being transferred into the park, we set out alongside our private guide and tracker into the dense, tropical jungle in search of some of the world’s last remaining and highly endangered mountain gorillas. After about an hour spent making our way up the side of one of the park’s dormant volcanoes, we finally came across the Kwitonda Troop; a family group made up of 20 gorillas, including two massive silverbacks, feeding peacefully amongst a dense bamboo thicket. The troop appeared to be very relaxed and comfortable with our presence, granting us a number of amazing opportunities to share some close-up and incredibly intimate moments with a number of different individuals, including one of the silverbacks with a baby. We followed the troop for about an hour, trying our best to keep up with them as they moved effortlessly through the impenetrable forest towards the edge of the park. Eventually, after some truly life-changing and unforgettable moments with these remarkable animals, we started to make our way back down the mountain for some much needed refreshments and something to eat before finally making our way back to the lodge.

With these remarkable encounters and unforgettable moments still fresh in our minds, we are incredibly excited to take some of our guests back up to Rwanda to make some magical memories of their own.
